What is a tax invoice?
A tax invoice is a document that records the supply of goods or services and complies with the requirements specified in the GST law. A tax invoice will generally be issued by the supplier.

Why are tax invoices needed?
A supplier of goods or services that are valued at more than $50 will need to provide a tax invoice so the recipient can claim an input tax credit for their acquisition. In special cases, a tax invoice will be provided by the recipient of a supply. Recipient created tax invoices will inform suppliers of their GST liability.

What are the tax invoice requirements?
The GST law requires a tax invoice to show:

• The ABN of the issuer of the document.
• The GST-inclusive price of a taxable supply, and
• Other information as specified in the regulations.

In addition to the issuer’s ABN and the GST-inclusive price of a taxable supply, a tax invoice for supplies of $1000 or more must contain:

• The words ‘tax invoice’ stated prominently on the document
• The date of issue of the tax invoice
• The name, or trading name, of the supplier
• The name of the recipient
• The address or ABN of the recipient
• A brief description of each thing supplied, and
• The quantity or volume of what was supplied.
